Salary: £19.59 per hour
Hours: 37 hours per week
Duration: Temporary, Full-Time (initially expected to be approximately 3 months)
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm

Apple Recruitment Services are currently seeking an Animal Breeding and Genetics Scientist (HSO) on behalf of a public sector scientific organisation based in Hillsborough.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced scientist with a strong background in animal breeding, genetics and quantitative analysis to contribute to scientific research, knowledge transfer and engagement with farmers and industry stakeholders.

Key Duties

The successful candidate will work as an Animal Breeding and Genetics Scientist, applying specialist scientific knowledge and analytical skills within the area of animal breeding and genetics.

Key areas of responsibility will include:

• Applying knowledge of quantitative genetics, breeding programmes and genomic selection.
• Analysing complex biological and genomic datasets.
• Undertaking statistical analysis and interpreting scientific data.
• Applying animal breeding principles within commercial farm systems.
• Supporting knowledge transfer and effective engagement with farmers and industry stakeholders.
• Communicating complex scientific concepts clearly to non-specialist audiences.
• Working independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Managing multiple tasks and delivering high-quality work within tight deadlines.
• Applying strong analytical, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to scientific work.
• Supporting effective project management and organisation of work.

Essential Criteria

Applicants must have:

• An MSc or PhD in Animal Breeding, Genetics, Biology, Agriculture, or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of quantitative genetics, breeding programmes, and genomic selection.
• Proven ability to analyse complex biological and genomic datasets.
• Proficiency in statistical analysis, with strong experience using R. Knowledge of Python or similar tools is an advantage.
• Experience applying animal breeding principles within commercial farm systems.
• Demonstrated experience in knowledge transfer and effective engagement with farmers and industry stakeholders.
• Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to non-specialist audiences.
• Strong organisational and project management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
