Director of Estimating

Director of Estimating in Mechanicsburg! Our client is expanding, and looking to add a candidate ready to step into a leadership role and mentor Junior Estimators! Responsibilities - Direct all work related to the preparation of accurate and competitive estimates and bids for proposed construction projects, reporting directly to the President. - Review potential project bidding opportunities and provide recommendations to the President. - Oversee and direct estimating department personnel, including support staff - ensure protocol is followed, assign projects, and coordinate work on a regular basis. - Examine drawings and specifications immediately upon receipt to determine job requirements and develop a complete understanding of project scope. - Issue RFIs to the design team to clarify scope and identify missing information. - Perform quantity take-offs and pricing. - Solicit bids from subcontractors and suppliers, with a goal of 3-5 prices for each trade. - Take necessary measures to assure complete coverage and accurate scope of work. - Attend pre-bid meetings and examine site/existing conditions. - Compile estimates for review, allowing adequate time for review, wrap-up, and delivery. - Manage project turnover - prepare documentation and review with the Project Manager/Superintendent, including the bid form and estimating spreadsheet, subcontractor and supplier quotes, qualifications and clarifications, special requirements, and schedule. - Maintain estimating systems and data - collect cost and productivity information, update estimating rates regularly, and coordinate with other users to fine-tune and upgrade the estimating program. - Research potential new subcontractors, suppliers, methods, and equipment to create competitive advantages. - Provide preconstruction estimating services - participate in project design meetings and give continuous cost input throughout preconstruction, including cost studies, value engineering suggestions, and phasing analysis. - Partner with Business Development to establish clear estimating strategy objectives and support their efforts. - Provide information for bid tracking and compile historical data used to update estimating rates. - Assist with other company projects, tasks, or functions as requested. Required Education, Skills, and Experience - 5+ years of construction estimating experience, including bid and negotiated work. - Demonstrated ability to review project requirements and distribute drawings and bid notices in a timely manner. - Must be strong in Excel - Proven accuracy and thoroughness in bid preparation. - Strong ability to perform quantity take-offs, pricing, and complete scope reviews. - Timely, accurate communication with subcontractors and suppliers. - High-level communication skills with supervisors, Business Development, Project Managers, Superintendents, clients, designers, and other external parties. - Ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities while maintaining composure and a professional demeanor, and to handle urgent situations calmly and effectively. - Commitment to safety, quality, and integrity. - Willingness to wear PPE as needed when visiting active job sites, and to observe a business casual dress code in the office (dress pants and collared shirt when meeting with clients). Preferred Education, Skills, and Experience - Smartbid, Bluebeam experience - Preconstruction services experience, including value engineering, cost studies, and phasing analysis. - Experience maintaining and improving estimating software and rate databases. - Established relationships with subcontractors and suppliers in Central PA.
