Key Responsibilities:


The VAA is seeking a skilled and motivated individual to join its Climate and Environment Department. The Climate and Environment Department manages programs and activities that support environmental best practices, mitigate risks, and reduces the impacts from airport operations, as well as fulfilling some of the strategic objectives that are outlined in the Environmental Management Plan (EMP). In addition to addressing key environmental management areas waste, water, and habitat conservation, the EMP commits the Airport Authority to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions from operations, maintaining carbon neutrality as of 2020 and reaching net zero emissions by 2030 or earlier. Achieving cost effective net-zero emissions success will require investment in energy conservation, low carbon electrification and renewable energy. This BC Hydro-funded co-op position will report to the Manager of Climate and Environment and will work closely with the VAA Energy Manager and Planning Department in delivering outcomes that support these investments and achieve electricity and greenhouse gas savings at YVR.



Key Responsibilities:


The successful candidate will:



  • Assist in the implementation of energy management initiatives and actions as identified in VAA's current Strategic Energy Management Plan that support energy conservation and demand management best practices;

  • Support the Energy Manager and other VAA departments or committees with identification, development, analysis and delivery of energy conservation and emissions reduction projects, including low-carbon electrification and renewable energy generation projects;

  • Support Energy Planning team with implementation of key areas identified within the Energy Strategy workplan. This could include supporting the study of renewable on-site generation, best practice industry reviews, clean tech eco-system scans, and assessing grid supply options (and costs) to meet forecasted Airport electrical load growth for both transmission and distribution supply.

  • Conduct data analysis and develop presentation materials, reports, briefing notes, and summaries for internal and/or external communication and engagement.

  • Assist in the implementation of a tenant energy engagement program, such as helping to draft energy saving and emissions engagement materials, as well as presenting key information to various stakeholder groups; and,

  • Support other Climate and Environment initiatives and/or analysis as needed.



Key Qualifications and Skills:


The individual will have the following:



  • Completing their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a Bachelor of Engineering or Master's degree at a BC University offering a co-op program.

  • Experience performing energy related data analysis, including managing large data sets

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability work well independently and balance multiple priorities

  • Strong computer skills, in particular, Office 365, especially Excel, Word, Outlook

  • Ability to liaise and communicate with wide range of stakeholders, including internal team members

  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service and excellence


Knowledge in the following areas would be an asset:



  • Electrical and mechanical building systems (e.g. HVAC, pumps, motors, fans, etc.)

  • Energy conservation principles and calculations

  • Electrical grid infrastructure, power distribution and transmission including system impact assessment through coursework/project in energy systems, power generation, distribution networks.

  • Awareness of commercially deployed renewable energy generation technologies (e.g., solar PV) and energy storage systems (e.g., batteries), with a strong interest in learning and staying up to date on emerging technologies and innovations in clean tech.

  • Climate change mitigation and greenhouse gas accounting

  • Experience in environmental awareness campaigns and outreach


Although not required, French language skills are an asset as we are committed to providing bilingual services to our visitors and passengers. This helps us meet federal language obligations while ensuring welcoming experience. Candidates who do not speak French are still strongly encouraged to apply.


Work will be performed physically at the Vancouver International Airport, with an option to work remotely up to two days a week.


To perform work at the airport, the successful candidate must be able to qualify for a Restricted Area Identity Card and Transportation Security Clearance; as such, you would be required to provide a place of residence in Canada (if in Canada for less than 5 years, former addresses will be required) and have a clean criminal record.
