Description: Certified Pathologists' Assistant (PA) Job Description Overview: A Certified Pathologists Assistant (PA) is a highly trained allied health professional who provides anatomic pathology services under the supervision of a licensed pathologist. PAs play a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of disease by performing gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens, and assisting in postmortem examinations. Key Responsibilities: -
Perform gross dissection and description of surgical specimens, including complex oncology cases, in accordance with laboratory protocols. -
Assist with and/or independently perform autopsies, including evisceration, dissection, and documentation of findings. -
Photograph specimens and maintain proper documentation and labeling for diagnostic, legal, and educational purposes. -
Ensure accurate specimen identification and chain of custody. -
Prepare specimens for histological processing and assist in tissue banking procedures when required. -
Maintain compliance with laboratory safety procedures, CAP, CLIA, and other regulatory standards. -
Collaborate closely with pathologists, histotechnologists, and other laboratory staff to ensure timely and accurate reporting. -
Participate in QA/QC activities and contribute to process improvement initiatives. -
Assist in training new staff or pathology residents as needed. Qualifications: -
Master s degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists Assistant program. -
Certification by the ASCP Board of Certification (PA-ASCP) required. -
Experience with grossing surgical specimens and conducting autopsies preferred. -
Strong understanding of anatomy, medical terminology, and pathology laboratory procedures. -
Excellent communication, organizational, and documentation skills. -
Proficient with LIS systems and digital pathology tools.
